Waitrose: A Premier British Supermarket Chain

Waitrose is a chain of supermarkets in the UK. They have different store types, with more than 350 regular supermarkets and over 50 smaller convenience-style shops. They sell a range of fresh and frozen produce typically found in a supermarket. Interestingly, they supply the cooks of the Queen and Prince Charles with food and wine for the preparation of their meals. This has given them an upmarket reputation, and they hold a Royal Warrant to recognise this. The royal connections do not end there; the supermarket chain also stocks the food of an organic retailer that was supported directly by Prince Charles. In their stores, you can find a comprehensive range of food and drink products, including dairy products, dry goods, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, ethnic foods, pet foods, and homewares.

Opening Times and Store Locations

The company's 350-and-counting main establishments and their smaller convenience stores are dotted around the UK in major cities and towns. In fact, they can be found in over 230 different locations, which means some residents have more than one store nearby. This is especially true for those living in Bristol, London, and Reading, because these cities have the most stores. Spotting one of their branches is exceptionally easy due to their familiar branding and logo. The company logo hangs above their entrances and on their signs. It is the company name written in green text on a white background.

Waitrose stores usually follow set opening times, but some locations may differ—especially their convenience stores. Stores are usually accessible seven days per week. From Monday to Friday, the standard opening hours are between 8 am and 9 pm. On Saturdays, they close one hour earlier at 8 pm, and on Sundays they are open for fewer hours between 10 am and 4 pm. Note that the opening times are subject to change at specific branches and at different times of the year as key calendar dates draw closer. It is always advised that you consult the opening hours of a specific branch, even more so on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day, and bank holidays, where hours may change significantly or stores may be closed throughout the day. Five Interesting Things You Didn’t Know

The supermarkets may be well known amongst the British public and even in Buckingham Palace, but there are some facts about the business and the way they operate that may surprise the frequent customer. These include:

  • They have their own magazine which carries articles by well-known authors—they use this to market their products.
  • They are owned by the John Lewis Partnership, which believes in corporate sharing of profits amongst staff.
  • Their head office is in Berkshire.
  • They were the first large UK supermarket to sell organic produce.
  • Founded over a century ago, they have developed into a well-respected organisation with a Royal Warrant, meaning they are recognised for their quality by the Royal Household.
Products and Services

As a supermarket, they offer customers the chance to buy a wide selection of food and beverages. Customers can buy fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, baked goods, frozen items, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, among other items. They run an organic range and many products to cater to those with allergies and other dietary requirements. They also sell non-edible items such as flowers, pet amenities, and more. They fundraise for groups and charities and also run an online blog to discuss recipes. Groceries can be bought in store or can be purchased for delivery on their official website.

A Brief History

A trio of men founded the company in 1904 as a small grocer in West London. The third owner, Mr. Taylor, left the business, and the two remaining partners, Mr. Waite and Mr. Rose, combined their surnames to create the company name. After expanding to ten stores, the John Lewis Partnership took over the company. They bought out other companies and used one of their stores to produce the first self-service shop. They continued to acquire other businesses, including some former Somerfield stores and others. They also had a temporary partnership with Boots Pharmacy which has since ceased. In 2011, their online service was finalised, and they continue to serve UK customers in-store or online successfully.
