A Brief History

This optical brand’s first store was opened in 1988 in Gateshead’s MetroCentre shopping mall. This was rapidly followed up by a number of other store openings. Almost a decade later, the company was purchased by GrandVision, a Dutch company which has a number of stores Europe-wide under several names as well as other stores in different parts of the world. The Lithuanian and Latvian markets have a particularly strong brand presence, and these are still in operation today. By 2007, the company had more than 200 stores nationwide, and following the acquisition of Batemans Opticians in 2008, tens of stores were added to the portfolio.

Today, there are around 600 stores across the UK, Republic of Ireland, and Jersey, with around 200 being fully owned by the company and the rest being under a joint venture partnership. The brand has also spread to Poland, with over 100 stores there. There are also stores now open in India as part of a partnership with Reliance. The most recent development has been the incorporation of more than 200 branches of Tesco Opticians into the Vision Express portfolio. This has enabled them to reach more widely with their charitable ventures into countries and locations where the need is greatest.
