EE: The UK's Largest Mobile Network Operator

EE is a mobile network operator and internet service provider in the UK. Originally set up in 2010 as a joint venture between France Télécom and Deutsche Telekom, EE is one of the divisions within the BT Group now, having been acquired as part of their growth vision. They are the biggest UK mobile operator, with a base of almost 30 million customers. They’ve also become the largest 4G service operator in Europe. They market in many stores, including Carphone Warehouse, so have huge access potential for customers.

EE offers a wide range of mobile phone plans and data plans as well as home broadband. They also sell handsets across all of the biggest and best-known brands.

The business has continued to trailblaze by being the first to use new technology, such as the introduction of contactless payments for mobiles in 2011, the first operator to do so.

EE Opening Times and Locations

Although EE has a strong focus on digital and online services, it also retains a retail presence within the UK. This means there are around 550 stores around the UK in a variety of formats including pop-up shops, cabins, and concessions. EE has the strongest presence in London, Birmingham, and Bristol.

The EE opening times will depend largely on the type of retail unit and where it’s located. However, as a general guide, you can expect the EE opening times to be 9 am–5:30 pm Mon–Sat and 10 am–4 pm on Sunday. The EE opening times on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day, and bank holidays should be the same as the opening hours found in other shops, and in line with standard trading regulations although it is always best to check the EE opening times for your local branch to ensure that you don’t have a wasted trip.

  • EE stands for Everything Everywhere and is the brand that was initially behind T-Mobile and Orange.
  • They were the first network in the UK to enable smart number technology, allowing the same number to be used for all smart devices.
  • In 2013, EE became a sponsor for the BAFTAs.
  • The company provided reusable chargers at Glastonbury, allowing festival-goers to swap the charged bar once a day for a fully-charged replacement.

Products and Services

EE is one of the leading providers of digital services in the UK, providing mobile networks and broadband, servicing in excess of 31 million connections. The company is committed to providing the fastest speeds and best 4G coverage, including HD voice calling. With over 150 million voice calls every day, EE is extending additional services such as WiFi calling and 4G calling to get full coverage across the whole of the UK. EE is actively leading the development of new 5G networks.

Although the company has built up its reputation providing mobile technology, they’ve also branched out into digital and smart services too. Partnering up with some of the best tech firms in the market, EE now provides a range of smart home accessories which offer remote control for some of the essential functions such as lighting, heating, and WiFi.

A Brief History of EE

EE was first conceived in 2009 when the French owner of Orange and the German owner of T-Mobile came up with the idea of getting together to create a single, more powerful brand. In 2010 the idea came to fruition and Everything Everywhere was born. The brand was not intended to be consumer-facing. One year later it was rebranded as EE, with Olaf Swantee, the chief executive, describing the original business name as just “silly”. Despite the original intention, by September 2012 the company announced that it would be rebranding as EE, and the Orange and T-Mobile names were gradually phased out.

Just one year later, in 2014, BT was in talks to buy out the business for a whopping £12.5 billion. Due to concerns over fair competition in the market, it took some time to receive regulatory approval but was eventually announced in January 2016.
