In 1965, the Asquith family and Associated Dairies formally merged to create Asda.

The company continued to expand, opening more stores and diversifying its product range, including petrol. In 1981, Asda began selling its own-brand products. In 1989, it partnered with designer George Davies to launch the George clothing line. In 1999, Walmart purchased Asda as part of its strategy to enter the UK market but allowed the chain to continue operating with minimal interference.
