Morrisons: The UK’s Fourth Largest Supermarket Chain

Morrisons, or to give it its full name, Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc, is the fourth biggest supermarket chain in the UK, with its headquarters in West Yorkshire. Originally founded at the end of the 19th century, this retailer started out in Bradford’s Rawson Market as a stall selling eggs and butter, but today, it is a major brand that has become a household name. Today, there are around 500 stores nationwide, as well as a store in Gibraltar—the only overseas presence of this brand, driven by the number of British expats and military service staff and families at this location. They are usually large supermarkets but have expanded to include smaller convenience stores under the ‘Morrisons Daily’ brand, so you can be sure to find everything you’re looking for here. You can find fresh fruit and vegetables, a fish market, a bakery stall, a fresh pizza and hot goods counter, and a butcher’s and cheese section. In the aisles, you’ll find everything you need, including a range of alternative products to the regular own-brand items.

Morrisons Opening Times & Store Locations

Until the early 2000s, most Morrisons branches were found in the North of England; however, once the retailer took over the Safeway brand in 2004, the presence of the company grew dramatically across Scotland, Wales, and the South of England. The retailer’s logo has seen a few changes over the years, with its first incarnation being a very distinctive black “M” in a yellow square. Today, the logo is more contemporary in appearance, with simple dark green lettering and a yellow leaf pattern above the “i”.

Morrisons store opening times may vary depending on location; however, the majority of branches are open from 7 am until 10 pm Monday to Saturday and from 10 am until 4 pm on Sundays.

On Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Easter Monday, and Good Friday opening times may vary depending on location to meet local regulations.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About the Supermarket

  2. Around 11 million customers visit this retailer’s stores every week, making it one of the largest retailers in the UK.
  3. The ‘Market Street’ innovation makes this brand stand apart from the crowd, with expert butchers, fishmongers, bakers, and delicatessen counter staff onsite to offer advice rather than having more general staff knowledge.
  4. They also offer an online ordering and home delivery service.
  5. This supermarket has won numerous accolades and awards, including several Retailer of the Year awards.
Products & Services

There are thousands of product lines stocked at this retailer, many of which are own-brand products. Their economy brand is especially popular, sold under the ‘Morrisons Savers’ name, and comprises everything from frozen food to toiletries. As well as selling own-brand goods, they also sell all of the branded products you would expect across every department. Customers can buy everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothing and homewares. Departments include seasonal products, bakery, store cupboard products, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, health, medicines, beauty and toiletry goods, household goods, baby and pet products, world foods, free-from foods, and fresh meat and fish—they are one of the last supermarkets to employ specialist butchers and fishmongers.

A Brief History

Originally founded in 1899 by William Morrison, this retailer began life as a market stall. In 1952, the founder’s son took over the brand, and in 1958, the first shop was opened in Bradford. As the very first self-service retailer in the area, it was an instant hit, and the brand’s first supermarket opened a few years later in 1961. Originally focused in the north of England, the brand expanded greatly in 2004 when it purchased the Safeway supermarket chain. This gave the company a bigger presence across the south of England. Although the primary focus has always been on quality food products, in 2013, the Nutmeg children’s clothing brand was launched in-store. Since then, an adult clothing range has also been introduced along with a range of electricals and household goods. Today, this supermarket serves communities all across the UK, with an online delivery service that covers 11 million UK households. It is considered to be the fourth biggest supermarket in the UK today and is highly competitive with the other big names in the sector.
