Waitrose: A Premier British Supermarket Chain

Waitrose is a supermarket chain in the UK. They operate more than 300 regular supermarkets and over 50 smaller convenience-style shops.

They sell a range of fresh and frozen products, which you will find here. Interestingly, they supply the cooks of the King with food and wine to prepare their meals. This has given them an upmarket reputation, and they hold Royal Warrants to recognise this. The royal connections do not end there. The supermarket chain also stocks the food of an organic retailer that was supported directly by King Charles III. You can find a comprehensive range of food and drink products in their stores, including dairy products, dry goods, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, ethnic foods, pet foods, and homewares.

Waitrose Opening Times and Store Locations

With over 300 establishments in over 230 cities and towns, you can find it all over the UK. Cities such as London, Surrey, West Sussex, Oxford, and Reading have the most stores.

Waitrose stores are generally open seven days a week: Monday through Friday from 8 am to 9 pm, Saturdays from 8 am to 8 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm. Use the store locator to find a nearby location that’s open today.

Hours may vary on New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Eastern, Christmas, Boxing Day, and other bank holidays.

Five Interesting Things You Didn’t Know About Them

The supermarkets may be well known amongst the British public and even in Buckingham Palace, but some facts about the business and how they operate may surprise the frequent customers.

  1. They have a magazine with well-known authors’ articles, which they use to market their products.
  2. They are owned by the John Lewis Partnership, which believes in corporate sharing of profits amongst staff.
  3. Their head office is in Berkshire.
  4. They were among the first large UK supermarkets to sell organic produce.
  5. They are recognised for their quality by the Royal Household.
Products and Services

They offer a wide selection of foods and beverages. In addition to their selection of fresh foods, they run an organic range of products, including for those with allergies and other dietary requirements. They also sell items like flowers, pet amenities, and more. Groceries can be bought in their physical store or delivered by ordering on their website.

A Brief History

A trio of men founded the company 1904 as a small grocer in West London. The third owner, Mr Taylor, left the business, and the two remaining partners, Mr Waite and Mr Rose combined their surnames to create the company name. After expanding to ten stores, the John Lewis Partnership took over the company. They bought out other companies and used one of their stores to produce the first self-service shop. They continued to acquire stores from other businesses, including Woolworths, Morrisons, Somerfield, and others. They also temporarily partnered with Boots Pharmacy, which has since ceased. In 2001, their online service was finalised, and they continue successfully serving UK customers in-store or online.
